Summer Premedical Student Program (SPSP)

Director - Dr. Ronald D. Garcia, Assistant Dean for Minority Affairs

Program Manager - Kathryn Fitzgerald, M.Ed.

The Summer Premedical Student Program brings together 20 educationally and/or economically disadvantaged undergraduates to Stanford from across the country who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine. The program provides a background in cellular biology, human anatomy, basic research skills, and experiences in clinical medicine. Students participate in seminars on minority health care issues, test-taking skills and MCAT preparation, and effective writing and research skills. Other workshops cover the medical school admissions process and provide help in developing portfolios, obtaining letters of recommendation, writing a compelling personal statement, interviewing, exploring financial aid options, and selecting the right medical school.

2007 Program Applicants

Thank you to everyone who considered SPSP and took the time to apply to this year‘s program. The SPSP Admissions Committee has met and has selected 20 program participants. Selecting a small class of participants from a very competitive pool of applicants was challenging. Program acceptence letters have been mailed and should be recieved by selected applicants this week. To everyone else, we commend your interest to medicine and to your commitment to providing health care in underserved areas. SPSP wishes you an enjoyable and productive summer.

Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP)

Each summer the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) runs a residential program at Stanford designed to promote health careers to 24 low-income and minority high school students from Northern California. Of the more than 300 SMYSP alumni, 99% have attended colleges and universities and succeeded in a broad spectrum of academic majors and career interests. There is no cost to summer program participants.
