Response Questions

Lecture 1

Please respond to one of the following questions in 500 words. Submit at the beginning of class on April 6th.

  1. Institute of Medicine, “Unequal Treatment: Confronting Ethnic Disparities in Health Care (Executive Summary). Discuss the implications of findings and recommendations for the training of health professionals.

  2. Garcia and Wallace, PAs and Cultural Diversity: Discuss one or more personal experiences involving cultural differences that included any of the factors listed in Table 6-6. (e.g. describe the circumstances, the issue, the cultural difference (s) , and the resolution.)

  3. CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report. Discuss the differences between Health Disparities, Health Inequalities, and Health Inequities. Include an outcome from Health Outcomes: Mortality, Morbidity, or Behavioral Risk Factors in your discussion.

  1. Reading 1. R. Charon's article on "Narrative Medicine." Discuss the author's concept of "narrative competence" in terms of an illness incident you have experienced or witnessed.
  2. Reading 2. Cross-cultural Education in U.S. Medical Schools: Development of an Assessment Tool. Discuss the possibility of a required premedical requirement based on the curricula findings? How might such a requirement be met in terms of course work, clinical experience, life experiences, or scholarship? Use findings to support your position.
