Term Paper Guidelines

Fam Med 53937 / Hum Bio 54356

The purpose of the term paper is to provide the student an opportunity to pursue a specific topic of the course in greater depth than the lectures or the assigned readings.

We encourage creativity in the selection of the topic. You may choose an area identified in one of the readings, a topic presented in a lecture, or an area of your own interest. We strongly encourage you to talk to us prior to writing the paper.
We hope that you select a topic of true interest to you and discourage selecting something just to complete the assignment.

Please review the following guidelines for the paper:

  1. Select a topic of interest. Be careful not to pick something so general that you just review a series of articles without being able to draw any conclusions.
  2. Select a topic that has resources. There are many fascinating areas but sometimes the literature is very limited.
  3. Include a statement of purpose, which defines the essential question or questions of the paper.
  4. Include a review of the relevant literature. What do we know about the topic?
  5. Provide a critical analysis of the literature. What do you think are the strengths, weaknesses of findings.
  6. Provide conclusions and implications. What conclusions can you draw? What are future implications?
  7. Include your bibliography.
  8. Papers should be 20 pages in length, not including bibliography.
Feel free to turn the paper in on the last day of class or by 5:00pm on June 1, 2011. Please make a copy of your paper as it will not be returned.
